Art in Jeans

The first jeans came in two styles, indigo blue and brown cotton “duck.” Unlike denim, the duck material never became soft and comfortable so it was eventually dropped from the line. Although denim pants had been around as work wear for many years, historically dating back to England in the 1600s with a fabric there called denim, it was the first use of rivets that created what we now call jeans. “Waist overalls” was the traditional name for work pants, which is what these first jeans were called. The word jeans became more popular around 1960 when the baby-boom generation adopted the term for its favorite type of pants. How were blue jeans invented is a simple story.

Mr Strauss , an entrepreneur who first came to San Francisco sold dry goods and canvas material when he was asked if he had a pair of strong work pants for sale. The idea was the start of using denim in order to create a pair of jeans with metal rivet enforcements around the pockets and button fly area of the pair of pants.A loyal customer and tailor Mr Jacob Davis of Mr Levi configured the idea after many of his customers
ripped the pockets of their denim pants.Mr Jacob approached Mr Levi to fund the patent registration and they went int business together which was the start of the successful Strauss & Co.

The patent called 501 expired in 1890 and hundreds of designers and clothing companies started copying the use of this denim material designs to manufacture jeans. In the 1950 school kids started wearing jeans to be hip and mire adult like. This was the start of being sexy and noticed and a pair of jeans became the ultimate fashion statement.Calvin Klein photographed Brooke Shields at the age of 15 in their jeans with the slogan “Nothing comes between me and my Calvin’s”.Anna Wintour became the editor of Vogue and used a pair of Guess jeans on her cover in 1988.

Damien Hirst , a celebrated English artist has recently teamed with Levi’s to print his artworks on the jeans. He is known for sculptures of skulls with diamonds placed onto the skull which sells for up to 50 million dollars. His Levi limited edition collection has these skulls printed in vivid color on the T-shirts and cross hatch paint strokes in vibrant colors printed on the Levis jeans.Jeans today is a playground for artist , designers and advertisers to use as a canvas to inspire , inform and brand new ideas and art works for millions to buy and wear.
